Norton details are from its [Safe Web help page](https://support.norton.com/sp/en/us/home/current/solutions/v19116982), [Safe Web site](https://safeweb.norton.com/) and [products privacy notice](https://us.norton.com/privacy/products-privacy-notice), checked November 2026. "Not listed" means we didn't find it there, not that Norton can't do it.

Norton Safe Web is helpful when you want reputation signals before clicking. PhishClean is the stronger fit when you care about suspicious forms, embedded content, token leakage, and phishing pages that are still too new to have a strong reputation trail.

## The core difference: what each one does

Norton Safe Web gives a rating to the destination you are about to visit: Safe, Caution, Unsafe or Untested.

### What Norton Safe Web says it does

Norton says the rating comes from automated analysis of whether a site has been compromised, shows suspicious behaviour for a newer site, has been used for scams, impersonates brands or redirects to compromised sites, and it crawls the web and takes reports from its products. A site without enough data is marked Untested. Its ratings don't appear on third-party search engines in Safe Web itself: on Chrome that takes Norton's separate Safe Search extension, which isn't available on Firefox or Edge.

### What PhishClean does

PhishClean reads the page in front of you and runs 27 detection signals in the browser: login forms that post to a different origin than the one shown, hidden and off-screen iframes, homograph and lookalike domains, HTTPS silently downgraded to HTTP, and API keys, JWTs or session tokens exposed in the page source. It also matches each site against a list of about 380,000 reported phishing sites on the device. The page checks do not need anyone to have reported the site, but they can only flag a page that shows one of these signs, so a convincing page that shows none of them gets through. We publish [our test results](https://www.phishclean.com/transparency), good or bad.

## Where Norton Safe Web is stronger

- Site ratings drawn from Norton's long-running crawl and analysis
- Community ratings and comments alongside the automated rating
- Free, with a brand non-technical users already trust

## Where PhishClean is stronger

- Page checks that do not need a site to have been reported first, and that run on your device
- Secret and token leakage — exposed API keys, JWTs and session tokens on the page, which Norton Safe Web does not list
- Hidden iframes and form-action mismatches used for clickjacking and credential capture
- HTTPS downgrades and SSL stripping on connections that look fine in the address bar
- Privacy: no URL and no page content is sent to us, because every check runs on your device — including the search result badges, which look results up in a local list

## Which should you choose?

### PhishClean fits better if you:

- Want page checks that run on your device
- Handle credentials, API keys or tokens in the browser
- Want the sites you visit kept off the vendor's servers
- Want to see *why* a page was flagged, signal by signal

### Norton Safe Web fits better if you:

- Want Norton's site ratings and community reviews
- Already use Norton and prefer one vendor for the whole machine

## Can you run both?

Yes. We know of no conflict, though we have not tested every version together. Norton adds its site ratings, and PhishClean adds local checks for forms, hidden iframes and leaked tokens. If you only want one extension, choose by what you need most: free site ratings from a large vendor, or local page checks with a paid plan for the full set.

## Frequently asked questions

### Does PhishClean send my browsing history anywhere?

No. Every one of the 27 detection signals runs inside your browser, and no URL, page content or form data is sent to PhishClean. Two paid checks contact other services: the leaked-password check sends the first 5 characters of a password hash to Have I Been Pwned, and the coding-test repo check asks GitHub, GitLab or Bitbucket about the repository you opened.

### Is PhishClean free?

Five detection signals are free permanently, including blocking of reported phishing sites. The full set of 27, along with findings detail and history, is $9/month or $59/year. New installs start with a full-featured trial.

### Will running both extensions slow my browser down?

We have not seen a slowdown, but we have not published a benchmark. PhishClean's page checks run in your browser when a page loads, so the page does not wait on a server for them. We have not measured the other extension's speed.
